Merrimac - Welcome Back and Important Back-to-School Information

Dear Merrimac Families,
I hope you are enjoying these last few weeks of summer! It is hard to believe that September is right around the corner. We have been busy at Merrimac getting everything ready, and we are so excited to welcome our students back for another wonderful school year!
As we get closer to the first day, I wanted to share a few helpful back-to-school resources, reminders, and updates.

The handbook is a great resource to keep handy throughout the year. It includes important information about Merrimac procedures, including arrival and dismissal, attendance, school routines, and other frequently asked questions, as well as the expectations we have for our students as members of the Merrimac community.
A Quick Back-to-School Checklist for Families
A few things you can do now to help make those first days go as smoothly as possible:- Check the supply list and please reach out if your family needs any assistance. We are always happy to help!
- Check the Parent Portal and make sure all contact information is accurate and up to date.
- Make a lunch plan with your child — bringing lunch from home or getting lunch from our cafeteria. For our incoming kindergarten students, waiting a week or two before getting cafeteria lunch can sometimes make the transition a little easier. The same is true for breakfast for all students. Both are always available, of course!
- Make sure your child knows their dismissal plan and that you have clearly communicated it to their teacher — aftercare, walker (Flagpole, South Exit or North Entrance), or bus number.
- Kindergarten & 1st grade bus families: Please complete the K/1 Parent Authorization Letter for Bus Stop Pick Ups for students riding our large buses.
- Have photo ID handy. Any adult picking up a child from school or meeting a kindergarten or first-grade student at the bus stop should always be prepared to show photo identification.
Mental Health Support Team
We also have a couple of changes to our mental health support team for the upcoming school year. I am happy to welcome Ms. Brinna Bukowski, our new school psychologist, and Mr. James Duffy, our new school counselor, to the Merrimac community!Both will be important members of our team as we continue to support the social-emotional well-being and success of our students. We look forward to having our students and families get to know them throughout the year and are excited to have them join our Merrimac family!
Upcoming Dates & Reminders
New Entrant ToursFamilies of students who are new to Merrimac are welcome to attend one of the following optional tours to become familiar with the building:
- Wednesday, August 26 – 9:30–10:00 a.m.
- Thursday, August 27 – 1:00–1:30 p.m.
Parents/guardians of students who require medication during the school day may drop off all required documentation and medication with our school nurse, Mrs. Morrill, during one of the following times:
- Wednesday, August 26 – 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
- Thursday, August 27 – 11:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.
Our incoming kindergarten students and their parents/guardians are invited to stop by, meet their teacher, say hello, and drop off school supplies before the first day of school.
- Tuesday, September 1 – 12:30–1:00 p.m.
- Wednesday, September 2
- Friday, September 4
- Monday, September 7
- Thursday, September 17
There is still some summer left to enjoy, but we are definitely getting excited to have our hallways filled with students again! We are looking forward to another year of learning, laughter, friendships, and plenty of Merrimac Magic.
